In the1700’s the Comanche and later the Kiowa were among the first tribes to acquire iron for arrowheads by trading buffalo hides with Comancheros, who came up from Mexico to trade and raid throughout Arizona, Southwestern Texas and up into Santa Fe. The iron came from the iron straps wrapped around Spanish wine barrels. Iron arrowheads were such an improvement over the stone ones which had been used for eons, they were called Medicine Arrows, and believed to be a great blessing and sacred gift from their Creator.
